Charlotte SHOUT! 2024: Returns March 29

Celebrate Creativity and Innovation in Uptwown Charlotte

By Fort Mill Macaroni Kid March 29, 2024

Charlotte SHOUT!, presented by Atrium Health and Bank of America, returns to Charlotte March 29 - April 14. An aspirational multi-week festival, SHOUT! is designed to showcase our community by celebrating Charlotte's creativity and innovation through art, music, food, and ideas. Located primarily in Uptown Charlotte, SHOUT! will feature exceptionally curated programming from around the corner and around the world. This year’s festival will feature over 200 installations, performances, events and activities.

With something for everyone, this festival is truly immersive and exciting for the whole family. And the best part: its FREE. While some exhibits are ticketed, the vast majority are open to the public without admission!

New this year at Charlotte SHOUT!:

  • OPTIK: 301 E. 7th Street ~: The ten 6 feet (1,8 meters) gyroscope-like forms with, at the center, a dichroic film, offer new everchanging opportunities that reflect any ray of lights during the day while refracting the inner rings lighting at dusk. As the audience rotates each unit, they create their own endless cascade of colors. The experience is raised to another level as sound joins us on the rhythmical effort, turning each unit into a different musical instrument.
  • e/Motion: First Ward Park ~ From the integrated lit waves and water drops handlebars, to the soundscape redolent of the sea, users and bystanders are invited to explore e/motion’s magical ocean ambience from every angle. Is the base a whale’s tail or two water droplets? Let your imagination answer. Sea-saw your way through this one-of-a-kind experience. Come for the laughter, stay for the memories.
  • Sonic Runway: Levine Avenue of the Arts ~ The Sonic Runway is a light-art installation that converts audio signals into patterns of light that shoot down a 350 ft corridor of 20 LED lined arches at the speed of sound. At the front of the Runway, the observers see musical sound waves rippling away from them. Walking down the corridor, sound and light are always in sync. Looking back from the far end, walkers can see the sound waves coming at them, and hear the music as the pattern reaches them. A striking addition to any urban or festival landscape, the Sonic Runway becomes an unforgettable destination that offers an otherworldly sensory experience.
  • Luminous Lane: 100 E. 4th Street ~ Luminous Lane is an alleyway located half a block away from Tryon Street, connecting 3rd Street and 4th Street, that has been covered with murals, paste-ups, fiber art, and more. The project began as part of Charlotte SHOUT! Spray Jam in 2023 with the theme “Bringing Light to Dark Places” and curated by Sydney Duarte and Treazy Treaz.
  • Chair Monster: First Ward Park ~ The “Chair Monster” sculpture was created by local architect and artist, David Furman and fabricated by ASCM Design + Build. Nearly 100 wooden chair frames form the spine of the 60-foot-long mystical monster.
  • EyeLumination: Various Locations (Check site for details)  ~ EyeLumination pushes the boundaries of artmaking and projection by making it mobile. Visual artists, Mark Doepker and Rebecca Lipps, have collaborated on building a stylized eye sculpture that houses a small projector. The sculpture has been engineered to be mounted to the top of a 1969 Volkswagon Beetle with a trailer hub and metal gears. This unconventional approach to artmaking becomes an experience for the viewer on the side of the road.
  • Disco Skies: Levine Avenue of the Arts ~ “Disco Skies: Where Jellyfish Pirates Dance” is an immersive experience, where the mirror-balled pirate ship stands as a mesmerizing spectacle. Admire from the dance floor as a kaleidoscope of reflections bounce off the mirrored trim, creating an illusion of infinite space on the seas and skies. The kinetic dance floor comes alive with the sway of jellyfish sculptures and fabric waves suspended from the rigging, their translucent forms illuminated by lights. With each motor rotation the installation dances, casting ever-changing patterns of light and shadows. The ship’s hull is adorned with color shift paint creating a canvas of colors. Ali’s vision was bringing the sea and sky together where a little bit of imaginative dreaming can happen.

Returning exhibits this year at Charlotte SHOUT!:

  • “Pianodrome" -  America’s first performance space made entirely from upcycled pianos. This radically new 75-seat structure, which will be housed inside the beautiful, historic Grace on Brevard venue, is both a sculpture and dynamic in-the-round intimate venue.
  • "Easter Eggs on Parade" - located at the Family Frenzy on the Green, Easter Eggs on Parade is a fun way for Charlotte SHOUT! to showcase local artists’ talent inspired by famous, bejeweled eggs. This year we will have 13 giant eggs – a baker’s dozen – at The Green. Each egg is designed by a local artist.
  • The Queens Greens Putt-Putt: Wells Fargo Plaza ~ Come with a group of friends, family, or that special date and play a round of putt-putt. Our 9 hole Miniature Golf course has creatively designed obstacles by local Charlotte artists from Upcycled Arts. Upcycle Arts and Charlotte is Creative will build the obstacles to celebrate Charlotte SHOUT!'s pillars; art, music, food, and ideas. This course is a great way to take part in some friendly competition or just plain fun!
