With electricity rates rising each year, household power bills continue to increase for families across the Carolinas. It makes sense to look for simple ways to save money on your monthly power bill. Many of you may be looking for ways to do better or save more in the New Year ~ and January 10th is Cut your Energy Costs day!

Even small changes can add up so we've partnered with Better Tomorrow Solar to give you 7 tips to save money on your monthly utility bill.  AND Better Tomorrow Solar wants to give one of you lucky readers a Jackery solar generator like the one pictured below!  Keep reading for tips and make sure to read the giveaway rules.

1. Turn things off
Sounds simple, but are you really paying attention to this? Turning off the lights when you leave a room (and teaching your children to be responsible for this as well!) is important, but equally important is making sure your devices – think computers, tablets, tv’s - are switched off when not being actively used. Regularly used items can be plugged into a power strip that can switch everything off at once. Also, using natural sunlight instead of overhead room lights on nice sunny days is another great way to save on energy costs.

2. Make Small Household Fixes
Ensure that the trim around your windows is tight (you can use caulk or weather strips to seal off any air leaks) and add weather strips or door sweeps under any doors to prevent air escaping.

3. Change your Light Bulbs
Qualified LEDs cost as little as $5 and typically use 25-80% less energy than traditional light bulbs and last up to 25x longer. Check with your utility company to see if they offer rebates or free energy efficient bulbs.

4. Schedule a Home Energy Assessment
Many utility providers offer free home energy audits. If you’re a Duke Energy customer, you can schedule your free home energy audit here.

5. Install an Attic Stairway Insulation Cover
Grab one on Amazon for around $35 for a quick and affordable way to lower your energy costs.

6. Look Into Getting A Smart Thermostat
At less than $100, these programmable thermostats can cut your energy use by up to 30% by adjusting the temperature over the course of the day.

7. Commit to Change
If you own your home and are you’re looking for a way to significantly lower your utility usage and costs, investing in solar energy may be right for you. In addition to saving money on your monthly power bill, adding a solar array to your roof is an impactful way to reduce your carbon footprint.  Better Tomorrow Solar offers free consultations for homeowners in North and South Carolina.
