Swim Safety: Our Experience at Safe Splash + Swim Labs Kingsley

By Andrea Horner June 14, 2021

Summer is almost here; which means more pool time with the kids! While we are looking forward to more pool days ahead, we also want to be smart about swim safety, especially since we have been out of the pool for almost a year. My girls, ages 8 and 6, are pretty good swimmers but needed a refresher on their strokes and form to get comfortable with the pool again.

We decided to try out Safe Splash Swim Labs in Kingsley for their lessons this year. The owner, Leila O’Brien, sat down with me to get an idea of their respective skill levels and recommended the semi-private lessons for them. This was ideal for our schedule because they could take their lessons together and get more individualized instruction.

We booked our first lesson and the instructor assessed them and determined they were at a beginner level 2. The focus at this level is to develop basic freestyle and independent backstroke skills and build water safety. I was able to observe their lessons from the viewing area lobby that gave me a front-row seat to their progress.

Once a month they host a "Splash-and-Tell day" when the parents get to go on to the pool deck for the last 10 minutes of class to talk with the instructor and receive feedback on each child’s progress. I was given a class skill tracker sheet to show me what skills they had completed and what they still needed to work on.

We just finished our fourth lesson, and they have already made great strides in their progress. The important thing to note is that swim skills are not a "quick fix" and I would highly recommend a long-term commitment for best results. The investment is worth the reward; having the peace of mind that my girls are competent swimmers and will be safe in the water this summer is worth every penny!

If you are looking for an intensive program, they offer SwimJams, which are 4 days a week for two weeks and are only a 3:1 ratio for the 30 minute lesson. Swimmers can make a lot of progress in just 2 weeks! *See flyer below with available dates and times.

Safe Splash + Swim Labs is located at 1309 Broadcloth Street, Suite 101, Fort Mill, SC 29715. You can find more information about their swimming lessons here. You can find them on Facebook or Instagram.
