Started in 1970, Earth Day has become a global event occurring every April 22nd. With more than 1 BILLION (with a B) people mobilizing in over 190 countries, it is one of our favorite celebrations at Ballantyne Reading.

And, because it is something in which people of all ages can get involved, it makes for the best family time.

Here are our 5 favorite ways (plus some books) to turn Earth Day into passive learning activities for your child and have a great time as a family.

Recycle: Teach the importance of recycling while making a craft with recycled materials (bottles, boxes, cartons or cans). Build a robot, make a kaleidoscope, a tin can telephone...go wherever your imagination takes you. Turn "trash" into recycled art!

Garden: Learn about composting while you plant flower or vegetable seeds.

Go outside: Take a break from screen time by going on a scavenger hunt, a nature walk, ride your bike /scooter or play a game in your backyard.

Volunteer: Participate in a community event like picking up litter in your neighborhood or at school.

Learn more: Educate your family about endangered animals, disappearing habitats and ways to care for the inhabitants of our planet.

And of course, READ: Share both fiction and nonfiction books about how special the Earth is! Here are some of our favoites:
