A Note from Your Publisher

Black History Month

By Rachael Weiss ~ Publisher February 8, 2021

Something's been gnawing at me for a while - until recently, I didn't really know how to explain it. Last week I completed a Diversity, Equity and Inclusion training and while chatting with some of my colleagues about the experience, it dawned on me - I have not been using the privilege I am afforded as a publisher to move the needle. That changes now and I'm excited to bring you along on this journey.

And because it is February, I'm starting with how we as a MacKid family will celebrate and honor Black History Month.

As necessary as it is to focus on the history of our Black neighbors and friends, it always seemed odd to me. In my eyes, Black History is all of our histories, isn't it? Why aren't we celebrating the accomplishments and uniqueness of our Black community every day? Why do we tend to solely focus on the trauma and hurt? Why don't we celebrate the tremendous resilience, joy, innovation and excellence you find within our Black community every day?

This month, and all year long, we will introduce you to members of our community who are doing amazing things. They may be Black or Brown; they may be men or women; they may have different abilities than you or possibly the same - but one thing is for sure: they will be change-makers and role models!

Today I commit to you, my friends and subscribers, that Macaroni Kid is a place for all people - no matter your age, race, color, ethnicity or gender/sexual identity. Our site is for all familial structures and all members of our community. If there is something that you don't see, email me. If you have questions you'd like to explore here on the site, email me. If there is something that doesn't jive with you, I'm listening and here to make changes that best represent and tell your story.

We, as a community, have the power to change the trajectory of all our lives. I invite you to help me do that through this Macaroni Kid family. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for helping to build this community and make it stronger - and for always reading, commenting and sharing what you find here.
