Winter Camping~ Rough it without really roughing it

By South Charlotte Macaroni Kid January 11, 2021

I am not a camper, did not grow up camping. My mom always joked that camping was a Holiday Inn with a black and white TV, clearly, I did not grow up camping. My husband loves to camp, he would hike in and camp for a week, he would be alone. In an effort to find a compromise, we have rented cabins at a KOA. The cabins range in size and amenities depending on the KOA you stay at. We have stayed in cabins with a bathroom and shower, ones where we had to walk to the bathroom and shower, we have stayed at KOA's where we had a hot tub right outside the cabin. Each KOA has it's own unique layout and cabin offerings. There is even one in South Carolina that offers teepees for you to sleep in.

KOA is a fun and cost-effective way to take a winter weekend getaway, most cabins can be rented for under $100 a night. Each campground is different, they offer different amenities and activities, which my kids love, I love KOA campgrounds because it disconnects everyone for the world for a while. My kids run around and have fun, even as teens. They rent bikes, fish, play ball and more. I like that I have a warm place to retreat to (because I am a wimp) and air in the summer, heat in the winter. This is the type of camping I can get behind, all of the fun with camping and a real bed to sleep in and even a color TV.

If you are going to camp (glamp) more than once, it is worth it to join their KOA Value Kard, it helps with the cost of the rentals as well as other perks. Too cold for you? Book now for spring, the campgrounds to fill up quickly when you want to stay in a cabin. In the summer when the pools are open, you will find campsites that have some crazy pools and even lakefront swimming.
