We are lucky to have such amazing weather year-round and access to great mountain hikes within an hour or so. But, if you have younger kids or are not an experienced hiker, it's best to start with some easy trails the whole family can enjoy. Here are the best trails in our area!

Baxter Trails (1818 2nd Baxter Crossing, Fort Mill public library) are part of the Carolina Thread Trails. It is 3.5 miles and is great for walking, running or exploring.

Riverwalk Greenway
This is 4.5 mile heavily trafficked out and back trail located near Fort Mill, South Carolina that features a river and is good for all skill levels.

Anne Springs Close Greenway (2573 Lake Haigler Drive, Fort Mill)
You have several options for family hikes here. Members are always free, and non-members can pay a daily guest rate. These three

  • Lake Haigler Loop
  • Blue Star Trail
  • North Steel Creek

Founders Trail
The Founders Trail is a 2.3-mile mostly natural surface trail that provides connectivity between the Piedmont Medical Center Trail (Riverwalk) and Masons Bend Trail, all while following a beautiful stretch of the free-flowing Catawba River. The trail runs along the River and provides a series of bridges and boardwalks with ample seating to take a break and view the river.  There is also an overlook at the north end of the trail that's pretty fantastic.

Catawba Indian Reservation
Best used from September through May, this trail is a short 1 mile out and back and is used mostly for hiking. It's easy and pretty!

Blackjacks Heritage Preserve
The Rock Hill Blackjacks Heritage Preserve contains several hiking trails. You will also find meadows, wetlands, swamps, boulders, wildflowers, wildlife and forests - making it a great adventure for your whole family.

Honorable mention goes to Rock Hill River Park, which is currently closed for some renovations and various improvement projects. We are hopeful it will reopen in 2021!
