Anne Springs Close Greenway Hosts Earth Day, Anniversary Festivities

By Alex Sheeler April 20, 2017

The Anne Springs Close Greenway will celebrate it's 22nd Earth Day Celebration this and offer free entry and activities  to visitors this Saturday, April 22nd.

Opening ceremonies will include a horseback demonstration as well as an appearance from Greenway founder and namesake, Anne Springs Close. DJ Little K will perform throughout the day, with opening ceremonies starting at 10a.m. and activities scheduled through 2p.m.
The Celebration marks the culmination of the first-ever “April is Love the Greenway Month” and will recognize the campaign’s biggest supporters and “Get Your Selfie Outside” contest winners.

Over twice the size of New York’s Central Park, the Greenway features native plants and animals, 40 miles of trails, waterways and swinging bridges, historic buildings, and facilities such as its 1940s Dairy Barn for weddings and other special events. The signature Earth Day commemorates the Greenway’s opening in 1995, when the land was formally set aside for preservation and public recreation by the family of Anne Springs Close, as a tribute to her devotion to nature. The family ran the Springs textile mills for more than 100 years and has owned the land since the late 1800s.

More than two dozen exhibitors will be on hand, and food trucks will also be on site. Exhibitors include the Jimmie Johnson Foundation, Nation Ford FFA, Dirt Dauber Deb’s Mobile Gem Mine, Carolina Thread Trail, Keep York County Beautiful, Lotus Pilates & BodyWorks, Cabela’s, Nation Ford Land Trust & York County Forever, Museum of York County, York Electric Cooperative, Inc., Ragnar Relay, Catawba Master Naturalist Association, Greenway Education Team and FLYERS Program, Nation Ford High School, Greenway Birding Club, Riverview Elementary Environmental Club and more.
