Healthy Teeth, Happy Summer

Keeping Your Whites Pearly Over the Summer Holidays

By Orchard Grove Family Dentistry July 17, 2023

Summer is a time for splashing, playing, traveling and...unfortunately, dental mishaps! While we hope you are getting a vacation in this summer - or at the least, enjoying time outdoors at home, remember that with increased play (and that coveted ice cream or popsicle!), it's equally as important to you keep a few things in mind to maintain your dental health and keep smiling big all summer long!

Over the summer months, we all tend to indulge a little more in things that can have adverse impacts on our dental hygiene. Here are a few tips for combatting "dietary" challenges:

  1. Drinks: sports drinks contain lots of sugar; we know a lot of parents may be more relaxed about soft drinks/soda over the summer, but remember they are high in sugar and even diet options are very acidic
  2. Stay hydrated- water is your best choice! Enjoy other options in moderation.
  3. Adding fresh cucumber or mint/ herbs is a better bet if you prefer flavor in water
  4. Snacking during this more relaxed schedule: we may find ourselves snacking more often and or brushing less—try to at least rinse with water after snacks and maintain good home care habits
  5. Dried fruits are a sneaky snack; even if they are easy to bring with you as you head to a park, the zoo or the beach/pool, they are sticky and may contribute to cavities - fresh fruits are a better choice.

Injuries happen ~ When you play hard, sometimes you get injured; but the risk is so worth the reward. Just be mindful of these tips and you'll be ahead of the game:

  1. Injuries are more common in the summertime as we spend more time outdoors
  2. Wear protective gear like a helmet when biking, skating and a mouthguard for contact sports
  3. Teeth are not tools! Don’t use them as scissors or bottle opener!
  4. Walk carefully, and don’t run on slippery surfaces (ehem....we see you running around the pool or boat deck)
  5. Don’t let children run around with lollipop or popsicle sticks in their mouth ever!

Most important to us is that you have a great summer with friends and family. Make memories and call us if you need us - we are in the office and ready to help you if your teeth get in the way of your summer fun.
