Go on a Family Campout this weekend!

By Heather McCloskey June 23, 2016
Whether you are an experienced camper or someone who has never owned a sleeping bag, this weekend is a great time to get your family together for a night under the stars.

The Anne Springs Close Greenway will host The Great American Campout on June 25-26.   This is an overnight adventure for your family filled with hikes, a hot dog dinner, s'mores and a camp fire sing-a-long.

While I  fancy myself great at packing and planning for all things vacation, I am a novice when it comes to planning a camping trip.  To help myself and other new campers,  I have come up with a list of essentials to take along on any camping trip.

-A tent or other shelter of your choosing
-Cots or sleeping bags and a camping mat
-Tall socks and closed toed hiking shoes
-Food that is easy to make and dispose of (fruits, sandwiches, chips, crackers, breakfast pastries, bottled water)
-A backpack containing: A flashlight, water bottle, snacks, bug spray, sunscreen and extra socks

If you cannot make it to the Greenway this weekend, there are many places in our area where your family can unplug, relax and gaze at the stars.  Here are just a few...

Andrew Jackson State Park
Crowder's Mountain State Park
McDowell Nature Center and Preserve
Lake Norman State Park
Charlotte/Fort Mill KOA
Camp Wilderness Resort at Carowinds

Happy Camping!
